Experience Without Experience
Where do you start when you want event experience?
So, you want experience, but don’t have experience. Isn’t that the modern aged dilemma? Clients pressuring you to have at least two years on your resume even though you’re more than capable for the job.
I was one of those students. Back in 2015 I was consistently being turned away for not having the ‘experience’ many hospitality and retail managers asked for. I had been a volunteer for more than two years at Channel 31, SYN and RMITV but I wanted casual work and to discover new areas of interest.
I felt as if I was turned away by many clients purely due to my resume with no regards to my mentality or willingness to learn. As I was studying Media and Communications I looked further into any possible marking jobs or brand promotion activations that I could turn to.
That’s when I found Event Workforce Group.
It’s this reason that originally led to the creation of EWG.
Its co-founders; Bennett Merriman and Shannan Grove wanted to create a platform that allowed for invested and enthusiastic students to gain experience in an exciting and productive way.
After putting in a few applications I got my first shift- and for me, it was a breath of fresh air. Creating a profile was quick and easy and applying for shifts only took a single click of a button. I was really excited to work knowing finally I’d be getting this ‘experience’ that many other companies desperately seemed to want.
If I were to pick a highlight from the events I have completed, it would be working at the Tigerland Superstore selling merchandise the day after the 2017 grand final. It was so exciting to help out loyal AFL fans and to see people’s enthusiasm and love for their team.
Fast forward to 2018
I now am able to send through my resume to clients and be satisfied with what it contains. EWG has helped me gain the customer service experience I needed to prosper in events, and forward-facing roles. Recently, I have been fortunate in starting an internship at EWG, so far it has been more than rewarding and I can only see my skills increase as EWG accomplishes more events with larger clients.
